The Roman-style church (1280-1290), erected by Cistercian monks was subsequently remade in Gothic style. A powerful peasant citadel was then built around it (1500-1520), consisting of precincts with oval-shaped walls (5-m thick and 12-m high), surrounded by deep fosses guarded by 6 bastions. Superposed rooms were constructed along the walls to shelter the population in times of peril.
Several Roman capitals have been preserved inside the church, as well as a few consoles inside in the sacristy, sculptured with grotesque heads. There is also a funerary chapel with Gothic-looking murals (1460-1470) on the subject of the Last Judgement. After the 1593 fire the church was amply restored to its present forms.
